It is about a decade now that I got saved and I thank God for those things I learnt from the religious setting I found myself, but of course they were some things I also learnt that looking back at those believe system now makes me laugh at those time of ignorance. I really thank God for constantly blessing us with the revelation of His truth.
I remembered the night I watched the crucifixion of Jesus in a movie as a child, I was crying and without anyone telling me, I told myself not to sin again but of course that didn’t work- I kept committing sin. So I joined a church that taught me a lot of truth about God and salvation. But they also told me to live every day of my life for Christ or to please Christ. That created in me a work mentality, I had to try to please God, ensure He is not angry with me, begged for His mercy and favour, I had to read my bible daily to ensure that God is not angry with me, fast for God to answer my prayers, and to always go to church to please God.
The Pastor came up to teach about the freedom we have in Christ and he talked about the fact that we don’t drink, smoke, worship idols and involve in sexual immorality and called it the freedom we have in Christ and then I tried to figure out what the difference between our last class on holiness and this new topic is and found none. But a bigger question is “where is the freedom in the freedom we have in Christ?” and I left that class with that question unanswered.
As a believer, I had thought since Christ has died for me and saved me, I really can’t do anything without his approval. That is I owe him everything and that’s not true. Nobody owes Christ anything!
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
It is unfortunate today that many Christians are really trying had to pay a debt they don’t owe. The bible says that Christ is a gift to the world and in contest here, Jesus himself was referring to sinners. That is God gave Christ to sinners freely as a gift, not that He borrowed the world. The condition behind the gift of God is “freely”- not to be deserved or paid for.
Someone might ask, “what about the other blessings of God?” You must know that every other blessings of God are received the same way we received the gift of Christ, with the same condition “freely”.
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
God doesn’t want us to deserve His blessings; they are free gifts for us to embrace. God’s blessing is towards all men equally be it Christians or Muslims, be it Buddhists or Taoist, atheists or traditional worshipers, God love them all. Always lavishing His love and blessings over them freely- not to be paid for or deserved.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Nobody in the world owes God anything. He desire that everyone come to the knowledge of the gospel, He desire that everyone walks in His will always, but He is not forcing anybody to and His blessings are not means of luring people to believe in Him, they are simply the acts of His graciousness.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him
It is in the character of God to give things liberally without finding fault with you, with no intention of you paying back or deserving His gift. Beloved, God is not finding fault with you!
A religious mindset thinks Christ has done a lot for him so all he needs to do now is to ensure he stop sinning. But I am sure that few minutes after that time, he will discover how impoverished the nature of man is and that no man can help himself.
Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
No one can bear the yoke of the law; no one can keep the law perfectly!
The victory the believer has over sin is in Christ; the same Christ that died for us gave us eternal life and that is the only way we can overcome sin. When we find our self doing contrary to the will of God what we should be conscious of is the nature we have in Christ and not sin. Being conscious of sin cannot save anyone, as a matter of fact, one of the things God want us to be free from is the consciousness of sin. God want us to be conscious of His person and who He has made us to be in Christ.
So, God is not asking you to deserve his mercy, blessings, favour, grace and love because He knows you can’t. And even when you miss it, God is gracious to forgive you and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness.
Honey, you don’t owe God anything!
